When sesame was added as the ninth major allergen, the headline was the number: the FDA now recognizes the "Big 9" — milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame. But for a distributor, the count is the least interesting part. What matters is that allergen control in a warehouse isn't a labeling task — it's a segregation task, and segregation is about where product is stored and whether your system knows enough to stop an unsafe decision before it happens.
Why distribution is different from manufacturing
In a plant, allergen control is mostly about cleaning between production runs. In distribution, the risk is cross-contact in storage and handling: an allergen-containing product stored above a non-allergen product that it can drip or spill onto, shared handling that transfers residue, mislabeled or commingled pallets. The controls are physical and organizational — how you slot product, what you allow to be stored together, and how you route picks. That makes it a warehouse-management problem, which is exactly why it tends to fall through the cracks of systems designed around manufacturing or generic distribution.
Segregation is a slotting rule
The practical core of allergen segregation is a set of storage rules: certain allergen categories can't be stored in positions where they'd contaminate others — typically meaning allergen-containing product isn't slotted above non-allergen product, and incompatible categories are kept in separate zones. The strongest version of this is a storage-compatibility matrix the system actually enforces at put-away: when a worker tries to slot a product into an unsafe location, the system blocks it. A rule that lives in a training binder depends on everyone remembering it on a busy day; a rule the system enforces doesn't.
Allergen data has to travel with the lot
Enforcement only works if the system knows each product's allergen profile, and that data has to ride along with the lot the same way expiration and traceability do. When allergen attributes are part of the product and lot record, three things become possible: put-away can be validated against the storage matrix, picks can be routed to avoid cross-contact, and — if there's ever an allergen mislabeling event — you can trace exactly which lots are implicated. Allergen control, cold chain, and FSMA 204 traceability turn out to be the same underlying capability wearing different hats: attributes carried on the lot, enforced at the point of action.
What good looks like
A distributor handling allergens well isn't relying on staff vigilance alone. Products carry allergen attributes; the warehouse system enforces a segregation matrix at put-away so unsafe slotting is blocked, not just discouraged; and allergen data is traceable through the lot for recall and audit. The result is that the safe outcome is the default outcome — the system makes the wrong move harder than the right one.
